About Nathan

Nathan Carterette is a pianist who has the uncanny ability to communicate the inner message of music to audiences. Whether the repertory is Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations or Dafydd Llywelyn’s TimeQuake no. VII/part II, Mr. Carterette invites the listener to share his vision from the moment he sets foot on the stage.

Mr. Carterette enjoys creating programs that traverse the poles of the concert repertory, ranging from Scarlatti and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff and Scriabin and the exploratory music of our time. His playing combines a warmth of sonority with transparency and brilliance.

Winner of the 2004 Steinway Society of Massachusetts and Bartók-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev competitions (Sicily), Mr. Carterette has quickly established himself as a musician who is “very compelling in his power and presence” (International Composer). During the past four seasons, Mr. Carterette has given recitals in the United States, Canada and Europe at such venues as the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Yamaha Piano Salon, the International keyboard Institute and the New Paltz Piano Festival (New York), the Berklee School of Music (Boston) the Bartók Festival (Hungary), the Frugoni International Keyboard Festival (Italy), the Orford Academy of Music (Québec), and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (Hamburg). His Ohio performances include Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, Kent State University, Baldwin-Wallace and the Cleveland Institute of Music.

His solo premieres include the U.S. and Cleveland premieres of James MacMillan’s Piano Sonata and the world premiere of Dafydd Llywelyn’s TimeQuake no. VII, part II (Hamburg). An adventuresome concerto soloist, Mr. Carterette’s most recent success was a performance of the Schoenberg Concerto at the Schoenberg Retrospective (University of Missouri at Kansas City, 2008).

His forthcoming Ohio performances can be found on the "Performances" section of this website. Live recordings can be found under "Audio."

Educated at Yale where he studied with Boris Berman, Nathan Carterette has also worked with Anthony and Birute Smetona, Robert Weirich and Dafydd Llywelyn. A chance meeting with Llywelyn in 2004 led to an invitation to Munich for intensive study with the pianist/composer. Mr. Carterette plays organ as well as piano, and is an expert backgammon player on the side.
